"Patikim ng Isang Emotero - A Threesome" Dare

I am very fond of joining contests.  In fact, I just lost hehehe in one of the online contests I recently participated in.  But I'd also win in most of them. I'd get movie tickets, gift certificates and other useful stuff. I think it's the feeling of excitement in waiting for the result.  It gives me the high and the drive to visit the contest host's page every now and then.

Anyway, this is one of the reasons why today, I decided to mount my own contest. Oh wait, let's be careful with that, my first DARE. There! Another reason is that I'm turning 21 next month. No kidding! No typo error there. Yes 21... Lol!  :p
So I thought of daring you my dear poets and whoever's out there who happened to stumble upon this site and  reads this.  And from the exponential (yes! that's math for you!) increase in pageviews of this humble blog, I am quite excited to know the outcome of this first "pakulo" of mine.

Here's the simple mechanics:

1. Just comment on this post and share the ultimate poem that greatly influenced you. A poem that changed your personality, the way you talk, make decisions, or taught you useful stuff on matters of trust, love, or influenced your writing style or work ethic.

2. Provide the URL of the poem you want to share. Do not forget to include the name of the author.

3. Explain in 3 sentences why you love the poem. Be creative, Be fun, Be profound.

4. This dare will run from today, June 5 to the day before my birthday hehe, July 20.2012

5. On July 21, 2012, I will announce ONE THREE, oh yes only ONE lucky visitors who I will personally choose will get a gift from me --- one set 2 winners will get a set of Mark Angeles' chapbooks entitled Patikim, Emotero and Threesome.each and one winner will receive a P500 worth of Krispy Kreme gift certificates.

6. I will ask the winners to provide his or her address so I can courier the chapbooks the soonest.

Oh wait, if you do not know who THEEE Mark Angeles is, browse my blog post below or click here.

So poets, I dare you, comment below and share away. A "THREESOME" is waiting for you!

    Trees by Joyce Kilmer
    I think that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    ****
    My papa used to give me a copy of this poem when I was younger. He told me that the trees around us are like human beings with emotions, and each tree will react to whatever circumstances they are in -- just like humans. Since then, my love for trees grow fonder, the bigger and sturdier they are, the better. Because I believe that every person is a tree honed enough to remain strong for the rest of his life.

  7. Sad that only a few of the young people today appreciate poetry. I have some of Rod McKuen's books that I bought way back when I was still in school. I discovered his work in high school, hiram sa library.

    Here's one of my favorites that I found online:
    Pushing the Clouds Away by Rod McKuen
    http://simplycol.com/2009/09/09/pushing-the-clouds-away/

    I like the last lines:

    "You have to make the good times yourself.
    Take the little times and make them big times,
    and save the times that are alright for those that aren’t so good."

    The poem always reminds me to stay positive, and that happiness is a personal choice.

  8. Mother Teresa's Anyway Poem

    People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
    Forgive them anyway.

    If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
    Be kind anyway.

    If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
    Succeed anyway.

    If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
    Be honest and frank anyway.

    What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
    Build anyway.

    If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
    Be happy anyway.

    The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
    Do good anyway.

    Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
    Give the world the best you've got anyway.

    You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
    It was never between you and them anyway.

    -----It teaches us that even if the majority of the people are committing wrong doings, you must still do what is right. Just by doing the right thing we can have a sound basis for making wise decisions and for acting with consistency. With these simple act, you will be the living proof to the world that social change is possible. :)

  9. A Father Like You
    by Anonymous

    I just want you to know
    you mean the world to me
    Only a heart as dear as yours
    would give so unselfishly.

    The many things you've done,
    all the times that you were there,
    Helps me know deep down inside
    how much you really care.

    Even though I might not say it,
    I appreciate all you do
    So richly blessed is how I feel
    for having a father just like you.

    ♥ This poem inspires me so much as my dad provide enough to give me strong bones and working all of his life for us that help me shape my personality into a person who I like and am proud to be. I respect and love my dad so much since I understand that how we interact with our father is going to help our relationships with men for the rest of our lives, either positively or negatively.“Any man can produce a child; God has given them that ability, but it takes a Father to raise a child.”

  10. I would like to share the ultimate poem that greatly influenced me. My dad and mom even gave me a poster of this poem. So without further ado...here it is...

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
    Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
    With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

    I was in grade four back then, when I chanced upon this poem that changed my personality tremendously. It molded the way I talk,deal with others and about making decisions, it taught me a lot about trust, love, life and work ethics. It made me stopped comparing myself with others and made me strive for high ideals and goals.

    Advance Happy Birthday Edwin!

    God bless your <3 heart! Smile

  11. This is the sweetest and most romantic poem that I've ever read:

    Your eyes were closed
    Your lips were sweet
    And one soft kiss
    Meant joy complete

    Should I dare touch
    Your lips with mine
    Could gods refuse
    Such tempting wine

    If I should dare
    You'd angry be
    If I should not
    How cowardly

    And so while thoughts
    Went to and fro
    I kissed and solved
    The matter so.

    I recited this for my public speaking class way back 10? years ago. I still memorize each word. I've actually applied this poem in my personal life. Hahaha!
